Editor’s Pick: Self-Guided Tour of Bishop’s Palace in Galveston

During our Spring Break trip to Galveston, we decided to try something a little different and booked a self-guided tour of Bishop’s Palace (also known as Gresham’s Castle). This historic Victorian-era mansion is often listed as one of the must-see attractions on the island, but I have to admit: I went in with fairly low expectations.

The photos online don’t fully capture its charm, and touring old homes isn’t typically my thing. Still, the self-guided format made it feel approachable, as I figured we could move through quickly, see something new, and check it off our list.

As it turns out, this ended up being one of the most surprisingly enjoyable stops of our trip.

A Tour Worth Lingering Over

The self-guided tour includes a handheld audio device that shares the history and details of each room. While I didn’t use it much (I tend to prefer taking everything in visually rather than listening to facts and timelines), it’s a great option for those who enjoy learning more as they go.

The tour begins in the basement and gradually leads you upstairs through the home. From there, you’re free to explore at your own pace, and that’s where this experience really shines.

We wandered through the kitchen, dining room, bedrooms, and bathrooms, taking our time to notice the details. The kitchen was especially interesting, with its original appliances offering a glimpse into everyday life from another era.

One of the biggest surprises for me was the chapel. I wasn’t expecting it at all, but it quickly became my favorite room. The stained glass artwork, intricate details, and beautiful altar made it feel peaceful and memorable.

Throughout the home, you’ll notice rich wood flooring, ornate carvings, chandeliers, stained glass windows, and cozy little nooks tucked into unexpected places. It’s the kind of space that invites you to slow down and look a little closer.

What to Know Before You Go

While the home is beautiful, I want to note that it doesn’t seem easily accessible for everyone. There are multiple staircases and some narrow passageways throughout the property. If you’re visiting with a stroller or someone who requires wheelchair access, this may not be the best fit. That said, the exterior alone is worth a quick stop, so if you just want a few snapshots, go for it!
