Is Your Child Interested in BMX Racing? Here’s What We Learned at Rockstar Energy Park!

If your child loves bikes, speed, or just being outdoors, BMX racing might be a fun new adventure to explore! You’re probably already familiar with Rockstar Energy Park down in North Houston. My family has played at the bike park several times over the past couple of years, but until recently, we had never entered the H-Town Supercross BMX race track located there.

About Rockstar Energy Park

From what I could tell, Rockstar Energy Park is one of the country’s largest and most unique BMX parks, spanning more than 150,000 square feet of riding space. It features a world-class USA BMX–sanctioned race track, along with a separate bike park that includes concrete bowls, dirt jumps, pump tracks, a flatland freestyle area, and even an amphitheater right in the middle of the park. It’s truly an incredible setup for anyone who loves to ride! Adjacent to this park is a separate skateboard park and also a wonderful playground for kids (and this part is all a part of a park called Dylan Park).

Here are some photos taken of my first visit to the park. The BMX Race track is not included in this collage:

Our First BMX Experience

This week, we finally tried the BMX race track during a Homeschool Open House which served as an introduction to the BMX Racing League. It was so much fun, and very much out of comfort zone!

The BMX Racing League that we tried is a first-of-its-kind program that helps new families learn the sport while riders build skills and confidence. Kids ride exclusively with other beginners, making it a great way to get started without any pressure.

My 11-year-old tried it for the first time. She had no prior interest in BMX riding and didn’t even know it was “a thing”! But when I came across information about the clinic late Sunday night, I signed her up on a whim. By Monday morning, she was ready to give it a go, and I’m so glad she did!

What We Thought

The experience was smooth and welcoming from start to finish. The staff and instructors were extremely kind and encouraging, and everything felt very organized. We didn’t need to bring much (just bottled water) since bikes and helmets were provided. Some kids brought their own BMX bikes and racing helmets, and that was fine too!

The track itself is large, beautiful, and well-maintained. My daughter enjoyed the experience and gave it her all, though she ultimately decided BMX racing wasn’t her thing. Still, it was a great learning experience and a fun memory!

Who Can Join

According to the flyer I grabbed on my way out, the BMX Racing League is open to boys and girls ages 3–17, as well as parents and siblings 18+ who want to join in on the fun.
