VISIT ANYTIME
Texas State Capitol + South Congress (SoCo) District - 1100 S Congress Ave, Austin, TX
Have a free tour of an architectural marvel - the beautiful and stately Texas State Capitol, widely recognized as one of the nation’s most distinguished state capitols. Guided tours and self-guided tours of the Capitol and Grounds are offered daily. The Capitol is open year-round, with closures on Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.

From the Capitol, head over to South Congress for a completely different vibe. This lively stretch is filled with quirky shops, local boutiques, food trucks, and fun photo spots. It’s great for browsing, grabbing a casual bite, or just soaking in the atmosphere.
Zilker Park & Barton Springs Pool - 2100 Barton Springs Rd., Austin, TX
Zilker Park is one of Austin’s most loved green spaces and an easy place to spend a few hours (or a full day) with kids. You can pack a picnic, ride the miniature train, play on the playground, or just let everyone run around and unwind.
Right in the middle of it all is Barton Springs Pool, a spring-fed swimming spot that stays a cool 68–70 degrees year-round. It’s a little more natural than your typical pool, with plenty of space to swim or relax on the grassy hillside nearby.
If the weather’s warm, this combo is hard to beat, and it’s one of those classic Austin experiences that’s worth working into your trip.
Austin Museums + the Austin Museum Day – Various locations including Thinkery and Blanton Museum of Art
2026 Date for Austin Museum Day: September 20
Visit Austin museums for free! Usually one Saturday in September, you can enjoy dozens of Austin Area Museums for free in a celebration of art, culture, history, music, nature, science, and play! Thinkery (pictured below, photo credit: Thinkery), an amazing children's museum in Austin, is on the participant list, so if you're traveling with little ones, be sure to stop in!
Note - Austin museums are very much worth visiting on days when admission is NOT free, so if you can't make it on Museum Day, no sweat!
Another museum we recommend is Blanton Museum of Art. It's a picturesque art museum, and once a month (every second weekend) they host Blanton All Day, a full day featuring storytime, art talks, music, food, and more! You can pack a picnic or purchase food and drinks for sale at the venu.

Congress Avenue Bats (and Bat Fest) - 100 S. Congress Ave., Austin, TX
2026 Date for Bat Fest: September 5
Do you know about the famous bats of Congress Avenue Bridge? One of Austin’s most iconic sights is watching the bats take flight at dusk from under the bridge. During bat season (typically spring through early fall), this happens most evenings, as around 1.5 million bats fly out for the night.
Be warned - there's usually a bit of waiting involved, and once it starts, it’s pretty quick. Your kids might think it’s really cool for a few minutes, especially the first time, but it’s not a long activity. It works best as a quick stop if you’re already nearby.
Also, if you visit in early September, you might catch Bat Fest, a once-a-year celebration with music, food, and family-friendly activities.

Pumpkin Nights at Pioneer Farms – Pioneer Farms Dr, Austin, TX
If you’re visiting Austin in the fall, Pumpkin Nights is a really fun, immersive experience to add to your plans. Walk through a half-mile path where you’ll enjoy activations around different themes, all built from over 7,500 hand-carved pumpkins, and different light formations! The family-friendly event includes a few spooky elements such as fog machines, giant pumpkin spiders, and skeletons, but you won’t find any jump scares or gore. There’s also a village with food, drinks and entertainment like fire dancers.

If your visit lines up with a Broadway show at Bass Concert Hall, it’s a fun way to turn your trip into a night out. Touring productions (like Phantom, Harry Potter, and more) come through throughout the year, so check the schedule to see what’s playing.
