If you're looking for a restaurant experience that's a little different from the ordinary, consider making the drive to Black Walnut Café's Conroe location. Situated on the third floor of Galaxy FBO at Conroe-North Houston Regional Airport, this restaurant combines a familiar menu with something you don't find every day: a front-row seat to airport activity.
I'm pretty sure this was the longest visit I've ever spent at a Black Walnut Café. Usually I'm in and out. This time, we looked up and realized we'd been there for nearly two hours.
My daughter and I settled into a window seat overlooking the runway, and before long we found ourselves lingering over lunch, conversation, crossword puzzles, and airplane watching. If you have kids (or grandkids) who are fascinated by airplanes, you'll want to opt for a window seat. The restaurant's expansive windows offer panoramic views of the airport, where aircraft of all sizes arrive and depart throughout the day. On a busy day, there can be as many as 100 aircraft operations taking place.
It isn't the kind of thing you'll stare at nonstop, but having planes take off and land in the background added a unique element to our experience. Between the sunshine streaming through the windows and the constant movement outside, it felt like an afternoon getaway without ever leaving Montgomery County.

Families may appreciate another perk: Kids 12 and Under Eat Free on weekdays during the summer, making it even easier to justify the drive to Conroe from The Woodlands (although really, it’s only about 23 minutes from The Woodlands Mall, so why are we even acting like it's far away?)
Guests receive one free kids meal with the purchase of an entrée. At the moment, the kids menu features mostly fun lunch favorites such as chicken tenders, grilled cheese, and cheeseburgers, but I’ve got it on good authority that a couple of breakfast options may be added soon. Either way, it's a fun way to treat the kids to a unique dining experience while saving a little money this summer. The promotion runs through August 14, 2026.
What's on the Main Menu?
If you've visited one of the other Black Walnut Café locations (there's one right here in The Woodlands), you'll already be familiar with the restaurant's extensive breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner offerings. Although the Conroe location closes daily at 3:00pm, guests can enjoy an all-day menu featuring most, if not all, of the same dishes served at the other Black Walnut Café restaurants.
Breakfast favorites include everything from Eggs Benedict creations to Lemon Blueberry Pancakes. Seriously, narrowing down the menu is a challenge! Lunch options range from fresh salads and sandwiches to the restaurant's award-winning pot roast and its popular Chicken & Waffles..
We also sampled the Philly Egg Rolls as an appetizer (crispy and delicious) along with the Peri Peri Chicken special from the Limited-Time Menu. If you're someone who enjoys bold flavors like pickled onions, cilantro, snap peas, and sweet peppers, this entrée is worth considering.
Other Summer Standouts include a 12 ounce Ribeye, and a Wedge Salad.
The restaurant also offers patio seating for those who prefer dining outdoors, plus private dining options for banquets, meetings, and celebrations.
More Than a Restaurant
At some point during our visit, curiosity got the best of me:
"Wait... if this is on the third floor, what exactly occupies the first and second floors?"
The answer is Galaxy FBO.
Galaxy FBO is one of the fixed-base operators serving Conroe-North Houston Regional Airport. In simple terms, an FBO serves as a support hub for private and business aviation, providing services such as fueling, aircraft handling, concierge assistance, pilot amenities, and passenger accommodations.

The airport itself is impressive. Conroe-North Houston Regional Airport is an all-weather airport featuring more than 300 based aircraft, approximately 240 hangars, a control tower, multiple aviation businesses, and a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Federal Inspection Station that allows international arrivals.
In my mind, private jets belonged to movie stars and professional athletes, not everyday business travelers in Montgomery County and suburban North Houston. But after learning more about the airport and touring portions of Galaxy FBO, I gained a much better understanding of the practical role private aviation plays in business travel, emergency transportation, and specialized services.
Opportunities for Future Aviators
One aspect of Galaxy FBO's mission that especially caught my attention is its commitment to aviation education. Before this visit, I had no idea that flight training was so accessible right here in our area.
The facility hosts multiple independent flight-training providers, including fixed-wing instruction through Thrust Flight and helicopter training through The Helicopter School.
If you have a teenager, young adult, or even an adult family member who has ever dreamed of becoming a pilot, Conroe Regional Airport offers opportunities to explore those interests much closer to home than you might realize. Worth the Trip
Whether you're visiting for the food, the views, or simply the novelty of enjoying lunch while airplanes come and go at the airport, Black Walnut Café at Conroe Regional Airport offers a dining experience that's a little different from the everyday. Sometimes the best local discoveries are the places hiding in plain sight, and this was certainly one of them.
