Although artificial Christmas trees have come a long way (I personally still put up an artificial tree every year!), there’s just something magical about the fresh scent and natural beauty of a real tree. If your family picks out a live tree as part of your annual tradition – or if you’re like me and thinking about adding a real one into the mix this year – these tips can help you feel confident in choosing and caring for it all season long.
And if you’re planning to head out and cut down your own perfect tree this year, our Holiday Fun Guide features several wonderful Christmas tree farms to explore!
1. Measure Your Space
Before you head out, take a moment to measure the ceiling height where the tree will go, and don’t forget to factor in the topper. It also helps to measure the width of the area so your beautiful tree doesn’t end up crowding furniture or blocking walkways.
2. Choose the Right Tree
Walking among rows of fresh trees can feel a bit overwhelming. Think about what shape works best for your home: Would a full, fluffy tree feel right, or does your space call for something slimmer? Do you prefer that picture-perfect, uniform look, or sturdier branches for heavy ornaments? Also take a peek at the trunk. Bringing your stand with you can save you some frustration later if you discover the trunk is too wide or a little crooked for stability.
3. Inspect for Freshness and Quality
A fresh tree will last longer and look better. Check the needles. They should be green, flexible, and firmly attached. If you run your hand along a branch and lots of needles fall off or the branches snap easily, that’s a sign to keep looking. If possible, purchase your tree close to the day you plan to set it up, so it doesn’t dry out before Christmas arrives.
4. Check for hidden critters (yes, really!)
Live trees can occasionally bring in tiny bugs or spiders that were living happily outdoors. A quick shake of the tree before bringing it inside (or ask the farm to shake it for you) helps ensure nothing comes in with it.
5. Set Up with Care
Before placing the tree in its stand, cut about an inch off the base of the trunk to help it absorb water (unless you purchase your tree freshly cut). Position it away from heat sources like vents, fireplaces, and sunny windows. And be sure to check the water daily. Keeping the base submerged is the key to a fresh, long-lasting tree. (A freshly cut tree can drink a surprising amount of water when you first bring it inside. You might want to check it twice a day at the beginning.)
6. Plan for Disposal
When the needles are dropping and the branches feel brittle, it’s time to say goodbye. Remove all decorations and check your area’s guidelines for tree recycling or mulching. Many communities offer free drop-off or pick-up services for a short period after the holidays.
If you’re in The Woodlands, place the tree at the curb on your regular service day. Green trees will be picked up by the yard waste truck as part of your regularly scheduled services. For flocked Christmas trees, you’ll need to schedule as bulk/heavy pick up by calling 1-800-800-5804 or e-mailing
