Staying home for Independence Day this year? You’re not alone! We polled our readers on social media, and many moms are planning to do the same with their families. Good news -- the 4th of July can still be a whole lot of fun right from your own front porch (or backyard, or kitchen island…). You may be skipping the parades and festivals, but there’s still plenty of festive magic to be made at home with your family!

Now, let’s get into the at-home fun:
Start the Day with a Patriotic Breakfast
Kick things off with red, white, and blue pancakes, waffles, or layered yogurt parfaits. It sets the tone for a festive day and gets everyone in the spirit first thing!
Decorate the House in Red, White & Blue
Balloons, streamers, pinwheels in the yard, and festive tableware go a long way in making the day feel special. A patriotic bouquet and a few patriotic pillows (try Kirkland's!) add a perfect finishing touch!
Bake a Classic Apple (or Berry!) Pie
Nothing says “America” like apple pie. Turn it into a family activity: let the kids help with peeling apples and rolling dough. If you're not a fan of apples, berry pies + vanilla ice cream (Blue Bell homemade vanilla for me, please!) is just as good!
Backyard Cookout Fun
Fire up the grill for your family favorites, and don’t forget the sides and s’mores! Add in some music, a sprinkler or hose for the kids, and yard games to make it a full-on celebration. Of course, if you have a swimming pool in the backyard, you don't really need anything else!
Add Some Friendly Competition with Ping Pong
Don’t have a table? No problem! This affordable retractable ping pong set can turn any table into game central. (We’ve used it on our kitchen island!) Game on!
Make Tie-Dye Tees
This one’s always a hit! Create red, white, and blue tie-dye shirts the day before so they’re ready to wear on the 4th. I set up a table on our back patio, and the girls and I enjoy tie dying t-shirts in time for the Star-Spangled Salute at the Pavilion. Sometimes we add fringe and beads for extra flair!
Host a Family Talent Show
Encourage everyone to show off a patriotic-themed talent — singing, dancing, poetry, artwork, gymnastics, whatever!
Watch a Movie Together
Settle in for a cozy movie night with a patriotic twist! Whether you're looking for something educational, adventurous, or just plain fun, there’s a great pick for every age group.
Try Clifford the Big Red Dog or Paw Patrol: The Movie for little ones, or go for Molly: An American Girl, The Sandlot, or Annie for sweet, nostalgic vibes. Tweens and teens might enjoy the excitement of National Treasure, the humor of Night at the Museum, and adults might appreciate the inspiration of Hamilton, Lincoln, and Top Gun. For superhero fans, Captain America: The First Avenger is a solid choice. Don’t forget the popcorn!
Craft Up Some Americana
Break out the paints and markers for flag art, star stencils, or handprint bald eagles. Let little ones get messy with finger painting, too!
Sing Your Stars & Stripes Off
Create a family singalong playlist! Include patriotic classics like “Yankee Doodle,” “Grand Old Flag,” and “This Land is Your Land.” Print lyrics and sing loud and proud together.
Play a Patriotic Memory Game
Print two copies of patriotic images (flags, eagles, landmarks, etc.), cut them into cards, and challenge the family to a matching game. Great for little learners!
