Apple Store Offers Free Sessions For Kids & Teachers
altThe Apple Store at The Woodlands Mall offers free, hour-long, kid-focused sessions that teach kids how to code, work with robots and spark their creativity. The Kids Hour sessions are open to ages 4 to 12 years (depending on the session) and the Hour of Code session is open to kids 12 and older. No tech gear is necessary; you can bring your own iPad or Apple can provide gear for use during the session. The best part? Sessions are held early Friday evening and during Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The Apple Store also offers sessions exclusively for teachers, including field trips.

Sessions available for registration for kids (subject to change) include:
  • Book Club: Celebrate the magic of storytelling through creativity and play. Kids will get hands-on with drawing characters and scenes, creating their own book cover, and more using iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. They can bring their iPad or one will be provided. Recommended for ages 4-10.
  • Creating Music with GarageBand: Celebrate music by creating exciting tunes and beats using GarageBand on iPad. Rhythm basics are covered first, and kids will get hands-on with creating their own drum beats. Then kids will learn how to use Live Loops to make their very own rock, hip hop, or EDM track. Kids can bring their iPad or one will be provided. Recommended for ages 6 to 12.
  • Sphero Maze Challenge: Spark imagination and creativity through fun, hands-on projects. Kids will explore coding with Sphero robots by programming simple movements, loops, and more. Then they'll design a maze and navigate their robot through the obstacles. Kids can bring their own iPad and Sphero Sprk+ robot, or one will be provided. Recommended for ages 6 to 12.
  • Hour of Code: How To Program Robots with Swift Playgrounds: Bring robots to life in a hands-on session featuring MeeBot and Swift Playgrounds. Learn coding concepts and explore how to program MeeBot robots using Swift Playgrounds, an app for iPad that makes it fun to learn and experiment with real Swift code. Bring your own iPad running iOS 10 or later, or one will be provided. Recommended for ages 12 and up.

Registration opens in the summer for the free altApple Camp, where kids 8 to 12 can tap into their creativity through hands-on projects in a three-day experience at the Apple Store. Campers choose one of three tracks, then spend 90 minutes a day for three days at a local Apple Store immersed in the subject of their choice.

Free sessions specifically for educators are offered at night during the week. Current offerings (subject to change) include Storytelling with iMovie and App Design and Coding Basics. Teachers can also take their students or fellow teachers on an Apple Field Trip for an unforgettable learning experience. During the hands-on session, groups will take their imaginations to new heights using Apple products.

The Apple Store is located on the first floor at The Woodlands Mall at 1201 Lake Woodlands Drive. For more details visit their website or call 281-203-6870.
