KURIOS™ – Cabinet of Curiosities from Cirque du Soleil live through 5/21
altUnbelievable, unthinkable, unforgettable and out of this world... all emotions and thoughts evoked during the roughly two hour performance of KURIOS - Cabinet of Curiosities from Cirque du Soleil, now performing at Sam Houston Race Park nearly daily through May 21st.

Prepare to leave your jaw on the floor with amazement! KURIOS is a steampunk-inspired adventure set during the 19th century during the Industrial Revolution, translating into an incredible set featuring 426 props, the most of any production in Cirque du Soleil's history. We're invited into the curio cabinet of a Seeker filled with unusual objects collected on his travels. Every costume, character and act has a touch of this theme and the detail is unreal. The production features a cast of 46 artists from 16 different countries. Their costumes, makeup and set all excite the imagination. Unlike some of Cirques arena tours, this production under the Grand Chapiteau (Big Top) is extremely intimate with just over 20 rows and a seating capacity of around 2600. In other words, most seats have a great view of the action!

What should you expect to see? Acrobatic acts at their finest and most awe-inspiring - a Russian cradle duo, an aerial cyclist, amazing contortionists, an upside down world balancing act, trampoline-style net and a duo performing aerial straps, just to scratch the surface. One of the acts I most enjoyed was a yo-yo performer! The entire performance left me in a constant state of wonderment with many glances to my husband to make sure that we were firmly planted in reality.

I found most of the performance age-appropriate for children elementary-age and older with a few cautionary notes. Several acts require you to rely on your imagination, such as the Invisible Circus and Theatre of Hands, where kids may need some light coaching to follow and fully enjoy. In Act II, there is a Comic Act which had a mildly suggestive moment involving the performer acting as a cat with an off-stage laser pointed at a female guest's chest. This moment got a laugh from the crowd but may confuse your children.

How do you encourage the excitement of Cirque du Soliel after the show? Have a discussion on the ride home about how these performers train intensely as both art and sport to hopefully avoid children flying off the bed or couch trying to replicate anything they saw. A great way to engage kids after the show is to encourage gymnastics, take them to an indoor trampoline or bounce house facility or even just buy them an old-school yo-yo.

Tips for enjoying KURIOS as a family:
  • Arrive early to get a taste of the KURIOS experience. This production is the first time that Cirque du Soleil presents a welcoming act before the show starts, which includes three artists greeting guests while playing music and acting. These performers can be found at the entrance, outside of the Big Top.
  • If you are in your seats early you can enjoy cast members wandering throughout the crowd mingling with guests. I noticed they were particularly fond of children and kids seated near me were able to interact and pose for pictures.
  • Concessions are available.
  • Plan on a 25 minute intermission.
  • Prepare your kids for moments of darkness, flashing lights and loud music.

Further details on the show, as well as tickets starting at just $35 (while supplies last) can be found here. KURIOS runs through May 21 under the Big Top at Sam Houston Race Park at 7575 North Sam Houston Parkway West.
