So Berry Delicious! Local Fruit & Veggie Picking!

alt
With a rainy, short winter, our spring is getting an early start this year, as is the start of our fruit growing season. There are plenty of farms in the north area of town to get your berry fix and strawberries are about to be in season. Berry picking is a great outdoor family activity to encourage kids to learn about how the fruit we eat gets from the farm to our table.

My family visits Moorhead's Blueberry Farm a few times each season and as my kids get older and better at picking I'm finding that the two year olds eat as much as they pick before we leave the farm and my four year old is becoming quite the master picker. I love bring home heavy, swollen bags of blueberries to immediately fold into blueberry pancakes.

To ensure a great visit (and keep your little pickers happy), watch your weather. Early in the morning before the heat hits or on a cloudy or rainy day are great times to pick, otherwise prepare for sun, humidity and heat. If your day will be sunny, bring a hat, sunscreen and plenty of drinks. Fields are often sandy or muddy so play shoes or easily cleanable shoes are a good idea. Check accepted payment methods before you go - some farms only take cash or check. U-pick farms also generally have sporadic days and times that they are open for picking. Please call farms ahead or check Facebook for hours and what's in season before loading up the car.
