2017 Summer Reading Programs for Kids

altResearch shows that excessive fun and relaxation over the summer can result in reading loss. Luckily, there are tons of great programs in our area to motivate kids to read all summer long!  Check out some of our favorites!

Montgomery County Library - From May 30 - July 14, children through 12 years of age can complete a reading log with ten colored dots (each representing 30 min. of reading or one book) to qualify for a reading certificate, free book, coupons from local businesses and your name displayed in the library! Teens ages 13-17 who read 3 books by July 14th will receive a book bag with prizes and a free book while supplies last and are invited to attend the VIP Party which will include a DJ, photo booth, special prizes, and ice cream sundaes. Visit the WoodlandsMommy.com calendar for special events at both the Mitchell and South Libraries for kids, pre-teens and teens (magic! dinosaurs! bugs! pizza! crafts!).

Barnes & Noble - Kids in grades 1-6 can receive a free book by reading any 8 books and recording them in the Reading Journal (PDF). Bring the completed Reading Journal to your local B&N store and choose a FREE BOOK from their selection on the Reading Journal list at the store. The program runs May 16 - September 5.

H-E-Buddy Summer Reading Club - Read and log 10 books, mail the form to the address given and you'll be rewarded with a special t-shirt. Program ends October 1.

Half Price Books - Kids 14 and under can participate in the Feed Your Brain Summer Reading Program. The goal is to read 15 min. a day. Download and use this reading log, add up your minutes and have a parent or guardian initial each week. Once you've reached 300 or more minutes, bring your log to your local HPB (there's one on FM 1960) to claim $5 worth of Bookworm Bucks for each month on or before August 31.

Huntington Learning Center of The Woodlands - Reading Adventure runs May to August and is open to K-12 students. Readers record the books they read in a reading passport, including a personal journal entry about their impressions and takeaways of each book. Turn in your journals to receive ticket entries in weekly, monthly and a grand prize drawings. At the end of summer, Huntington Learning Center will host a celebration of participants' achievements.

Hanna Andersson at The Woodlands Mall - Giveaway: For each storytime you attend during the Summer Reading Series, you'll receive an entry (one per family) to win a set of six books. One lucky winner will be drawn per store on August 24. Storytime is held at 11am on 5/31, 6/14, 7/8, 7/19, 8/9 and 8/23.

The Fish Gallery - Weekly on Thursdays starting July 6th at 3:30pm, escape the summer heat for a relaxing afternoon with the fish, all for free! If you are new to our activities this year, we sit down in our showrooms and read some stories, watch our display tank have lunch, feed some fish in our pond rooms, interact with some animals in our fresh and saltwater touch tanks, and make a craft or color and enjoy a snack! There is a one week break during the 6 week series. Check Facebook or the website for details.

Lifeway Summer R.E.A.D. Program - Challenge: Read six books over the course of the summer and memorize six Scripture verses. Reward: Turn in a completed summer reading journal at your local LifeWay store to earn a free book and a new free Bible.

Chuck E. Cheese's - Download a Reading Rewards Chart (they have many different ones to choose from and it is a year-round program), mark the book your child reads each day for two weeks and redeem your chart for 10 free tokens. The only catch is you must purchase food to get these free tokens. Expires 12/31.

Scholastic Summer Challenge - From May 8 - September 8, kids can log their reading minutes on Scholastic's website to win digital rewards to redeem for great prizes.

Book Adventure by Sylvan - Book Adventure is a fun, free way to motivate your child to read!  Kids in grades K-8 can search for books, read them offline, go to Sylvan's website to take a quiz on what they've learned and earn prizes for their reading success!

Harris County Public Library - Earn points every time you read. You can also write reviews of books you read and do activities that help to Build a Better World to earn even more points. Every 100 points, reach a new level and win a prize. Highlights for kids include Art Camp with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Dance to Learn with Houston Ballet, and Chicken Big, a play based on the beloved children's book, performed by Book Bash Touring Productions. Highlights for teens and adults include robotics and TinkerCAD instruction, cooking demos, and writing and gardening workshops. Check your local library's calendar for fun events and activities. June 5 - August 5.
