Summer has taken on epic proportions! Superheroes will come to train during the Summer of Epic Adventure at the Children’s Museum of Houston. Beginning Memorial Day weekend, May 24, through Labor Day, Sept. 2, 2013 the Museum will power up and transform into The League – an elite, superhero training institute complete with superhero teachers, action-packed activities, daily epic showdown live performance, character appearances and extraordinary events, so that YOU (the superhero trainee) can beat boredom and all that stands against summer fun!

Games, balloons and oh-so-much fun. That’s what The Woodlands Mall is planning for Saturday, June 22 when the center hosts a Summer Kids Fest with a carnival theme. “We want to celebrate summer with all our little friends in the area. And what’s more fun than a carnival! With games and activities, it’s like a birthday party where the whole neighborhood is invited,” says Noemi Cortez, marketing manager at The Woodlands Mall. “We have a fun-filled morning planned and hope that everyone will spread the word and come join in.”

The South Montgomery County YMCA and The Woodlands Kiwanis Club is hosting the Kiwanis Kids YMCA Youth Triathlon on Saturday, July 27th, 7:30am at the Branch Crossing YMCA. Children, ages 7 – 12, (as of 12-31-13) are eligible to register and experience the fun and excitement of triathlon. It’s a morning of friendly competition and physical activity that can lead to a lifetime of fitness. This is the 4th race in the Kiwanis Kids Series 2013. All races are sanctioned by USA Triathlon.
Triathlon is an exciting sport for young children because it involves three activities that every child enjoys – swimming, cycling and running. Triathlon is an individual event with segments running consecutively until all three elements are completed.

Here's a family show the kids will love, and tickets start at only $19! From June 13-23, 2013, Houston Ballet presents Trey McIntyre's Peter Pan. Based upon the popular story by Sir James M. Barrie, Peter Pan is a magical ballet set to the music of Sir Edward Elgar in an arrangement by Niel DePonte and features spectacular flying sequences, swashbuckling swordfights, giant puppets, colorful masks, as well as costumes inspired by punk fashion. With elaborate, magical sets by Thomas Boyd and imaginative costumes by Broadway designer Jeanne Button, the production reinterprets the classic story with verve and wit. Research shows that excessive fun and relaxation over the summer can result in reading loss. Luckily, there are tons of great programs to motivate kids to read all summer long! Here are some of our favorites:
Montgomery County Libraries - Dig Into Reading Summer Reading Club - From June 8-July 19, children through 12 years of age can log their summer reading and turn it in for a certificate and lots of great prizes! Stop by Mitchell Library on June 8 for their kick-off party with music, games and fun! On June 8 and 12, The Woodlands Public Libraries will kick-off their reading programs with games and fun for families!

As summer begins, The Greater Houston Area is rapidly compiling disturbing statistics. Drowning claims the lives of nearly 3,000 people every year; A 5 year old drowned in apartment pool Mother’s Day weekend in Houston. Children, four years of age and younger, have the highest drowning death rate.
The South Montgomery County YMCA wants to help families stay safe this summer by providing the following safety tips everyone should follow before they go swimming.

Never swim alone, regardless of your age. -
Always supervise children when they are in or near the water. -
Only swim in supervised areas. -
Only wear Coast Guard-approved life vests. -
Floatation devices are no substitute for parental supervision. -
Have rescue equipment mounted by the pool. -
Keep up home pool maintenance (murky water makes it difficult to see). -
Learn CPR. -
Enroll your child in swim lessons. -
